Just Add Pictures: Turning Your Screenplay into a Comic Book (Notes)
10 a.m. Saturday, July 11 2009, WGA

Marv Wolfman (Writer/Comics Creator):

Love the medium itself. Good books have the qualities of --

  1. Characters that can sustain themselves
  2. Solid concept behind the characters
  3. Ability to sustain 5 or more stories

Look for artists --

  1. who can design characters
  2. who can go through distance
  3. are not one shot picture
  4. who can lay out a story clearly
  5. Ask how long it takes them to do the art work with some proof
  6. the most important thing is: storytelling sense. (Art can grow and be taught)

Jon Levin (Motion Picture Agent, CAA):

  1. Writers should try to have as much as artistic and financial control
  2. Studios look for the potential of ongoing franchise (in comic books)

Misc

  • DC and Marvel's core business is publishing. Working within their labels only. The plus of working with the Big Guns is good distribution, the minus is sacrifice of ownership.
  • Fertility generates success. Put out as much content as possible. Do not tightly grip on a precious one.
