Marv Wolfman (Writer/Comics Creator):
Love the medium itself. Good books have the qualities of --
- Characters that can sustain themselves
- Solid concept behind the characters
- Ability to sustain 5 or more stories
Look for artists --
- who can design characters
- who can go through distance
- are not one shot picture
- who can lay out a story clearly
- Ask how long it takes them to do the art work with some proof
- the most important thing is: storytelling sense. (Art can grow and be taught)
Jon Levin (Motion Picture Agent, CAA):
- Writers should try to have as much as artistic and financial control
- Studios look for the potential of ongoing franchise (in comic books)
Misc
- DC and Marvel's core business is publishing. Working within their labels only. The plus of working with the Big Guns is good distribution, the minus is sacrifice of ownership.
- Fertility generates success. Put out as much content as possible. Do not tightly grip on a precious one.
